Replacing car windshield wipers does not have to be difficult and it is something you can do yourself in just a few short minutes. Replacing your vehicles windshield wipers is generally a straight forward process but it can vary based on the design of wipers and the make and model of your vehicle. Here's a general guide considering the differences in wiper designs:
- Purchase the Right Wiper Blades:
The first thing you must do is purchase the windshield wipers that is right for your car. Keep in mind windshield wipers do not just vary by size they also may feature different attachment mechanisms so, be sure to purchase the wipers specifically designed to fit your vehicle. Don't presume that the size of one windshield wiper, such as the front left, applies to the right side. Vehicle manufacturers often use different lengths for wipers on various sides of the windshield. Additionally, if your vehicle has a rear wiper, it will also have a designated size and specific fitment mounting hardware. Check your vehicle's manual or consult with an auto parts store to ensure you purchase the correct size and type of wiper blades.
- Lift the Wiper Arm:
Carefully lift the wiper arm away from the windshield. Some vehicles have a lock that needs to be disengaged before lifting the arm. Ensure you lay a clean rag or another soft material on the windshield where the wiper blade was positioned. This precaution ensures that in case the wiper recoils accidentally, it won't make direct contact with the windshield, preventing potential damage.
- Remove the Old Wiper Blade:
Examine how the old wiper blade is attached. There are generally three common types:
- Hook Slot Connection: Push the release tab and slide the wiper out of the hook slot.
- Pin Arm Connection: Lift the tab and pull the wiper away from the pin.
- Bayonet Connection: Depress a tab and slide the blade off the wiper arm.
- Install the New Wiper Blade:
Before installing the new wiper blades, make sure to observe the positioning of the old blades. Keep in mind that in many vehicles the driver and passenger wiper blades may have different lengths.
Remove any possible packaging or protective sheeting from the new wiper blades. Examine the rubber material that will come into contact with the glass to ensure it is not cracked, hard or brittle.
Align the new wiper blade with the arm and follow the reverse of the removal process. Ensure it securely clicks into place. If the wiper blade doesn't click into place, avoid using excessive force. Instead, remove it and check to ensure it is being installed correctly.
Some vehicles have special wiper attachments, such as spoilers or integrated fluid jets. Ensure your new wipers accommodate these features and they are installed properly.
As most vehicles feature 2 front wiper blades you will most likely need to repeat the process for the other side.
- Test the Wipers:
Turn on your wipers and check for proper functioning. Make sure the blades cover the entire windshield without any skipping or streaking.
Consult Your Vehicle Manual
If you encounter difficulties or your vehicle has a unique wiper design, consult your vehicle manual for specific instructions.
Remember, while the general process remains the same, the specifics can vary. Always refer to your vehicle's manual for precise instructions tailored to your car's make and model.
